German Monument Protection Authority prevents erection of multicultural "Hörl Family" close to monument by Nazi artist

Rüsselsheim's urban space has seven "Family Get-together" sculpture groups, which have long since become models of identification and are known as "Hörl Families" in Rüsselsheim. On the occasion of the 2017 Hessentag, housing company Gewobau intended to have an eighth work of art, this time featuring figures in different colours, set up to complement the seven existing groups, and symbolising open-mindedness and cultural diversity. The group was to be positioned in the square outside the railway station, in the vicinity of automaker Opel's historic factory façade and a monument to Adam Opel. On the grounds that it was "non-tolerable", the Rüsselsheim Lower Monument Protection Authority rejected the application on 25 April 2017. The report stipulated, for instance, that new projects were "to pay due respect to the values epitomised by the historic cultural monument". The authority claimed vicinity protection. > more

Denkmalamt verhindert multikulturelle „Hörl-Familie“ in Rüsselsheim nahe Adam-Opel-Denkmal von Nazi-Künstler

Zum Hessentag 2017 wollte die Firma Gewobau den im Stadtraum bereits vorhandenen Skulpturengruppen „Familientreffen“ von Ottmar Hörl, die längst zum Identifikationsmodell der Stadt Rüsselsheim unter dem Begriff „Hörl-Familie“ bekannt geworden sind, nun ein achtes, erstmals vielfarbiges Kunstwerk als weltoffenes Symbol für multikulturelle Vielfalt hinzufügen. Es sollte am Bahnhofsplatz in Rüsselsheim in Umgebung der historischen Opel-Werksfassade und des Adam-Opel-Denkmals aufgestellt werden. Mit der Begründung „nicht tolerierbar“ lehnte die Untere Denkmalschutzbehörde den Antrag am 25. April 2017 ab. Darin heißt es unter anderem, neue Vorhaben dürfen es „nicht an der gebotenen Achtung gegenüber den im Kulturdenkmal verkörperten Werten fehlen“ lassen. Die Behörde macht Umgebungsschutz geltend. > more

"The first step is always the hardest", on show from 22 April at Zeppelin Museum Friedrichshafen

The Zeppelin Museum invited Ottmar Hörl to develop a new temporary installation featuring 300 serial sculptures from 22 April to 1 May in the run-up to an exhibition entitled "Cult! Legends, Stars and Icons". At the south end of Buchhornplatz, between the Zeppelin Museum and the Medienhaus am See library, the installation covering 200 square metres will turn Friedrichshafen's urban space into an "art location" offering an invitation to communicate. > more
