From 16 June 2026, conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl will be presenting the sculptural installation "Sisi & Ludwig II: Two people, one destiny" in collaboration with the town of Bad Kissingen.
He presents the figure of Elisabeth, created for this purpose, not as an icon, not as a young woman, not as a monument, but as a private person in simple clothing.
Almost no other historical figure reflects the conflict between social expectations and self-determination as intensely as Empress Elisabeth, known as Sisi. Elevated to the status of an icon by her extraordinary charisma, she played a significant part in the popularity of the House of Habsburg, but suffered enormously under the pressure of living up to her own expectations of this public image, as well as under the constant surveillance and court etiquette.
Like Elisabeth, King Ludwig II of Bavaria was also a member of the House of Wittelsbach. In 1864, they met in Bad Kissingen for political reasons. Sisi stayed there a total of six times for regeneration and health treatments.
The installation featuring sculptures of Sisi and Ludwig II will be on display in the spa gardens in front of the Arcade Building until 5 July 2026.
A special highlight awaits visitors on the final day of the installation: Ottmar Hörl will be personally present in the Kurgarten on 5 July 2026 from 3 pm to 7 pm to sign the figures from the installation. These pieces will be on sale on the location at a special price of €80.
