In the early 1980s, Hörl began experimenting with innovative painting on serial corrugated polyester. These works instantly found their way into important collections and museums. Since then, his involvement with painting has been persistent.
As Hörl's work encompasses almost all genres of art - including painting - the government of Upper Franconia has invited him to present selected works from this lesser-known side of his oeuvre. The purpose is to give visitors a new perspective on the work of the conceptual artist, who is always on the trail of gaps in art history.
It can be seen that chords of dynamic lines of varying strength conquer entire sections of the picture surface on green, yellowish, reddish or brownish backgrounds. In times of the Anthropocene and climate change, the idea of grass, lawns and, in particular, dried-up steppe immediately comes to mind, even if you don't immediately have Dürer's "Großes Rasenstück" ["Great Piece of Turf"] in mind - lines like blades of grass that overlap and seem to vibrate, as if you can feel the wind that is setting them in motion. The virtuoso dynamism, elegance, pictorial depth and energy that Hörl achieves in the two-dimensional medium is astounding. Hörl's sculptural approach, his sense of space and depth, becomes visible here and lends the works their deep volume, pull and impact.
Hörl's painting technique, in which he sets acrylic colours in motion on the canvas in a rapid, immediate act - even before they can dry - is a dance between control and chance. This direct, impulsive creative process requires full concentration, presence and intuitive inspiration, a real flow."'Painting as a high-performance sport" is how cultural journalist Dr. Birgit Ruf described this approach.
The exhibition "Rasenstücke" ["Pieces of Turf"] is open from 24. July to 28. August 2025, Monday to Thursday from 08:00 am to 04:00 pm and Friday from 08:00 am to 03:00 pm.
