"Das große Hasenstück" - 250 years of Albertina, Wien, 2026

To mark the Albertina's 250th anniversary, Ottmar Hörl is presenting "Das große Hasenstück" - a monumental reinterpretation of his Dürer hare. The sculpture, which is approximately 2.50 m high and 3.70 m long and painted in bright pink, will be installed on the iconic flying roof above the museum's main entrance, creating a striking landmark in the public space visible from afar.

The work is based on the ʺDürer Hareʺ, developed in 2003 - a three-dimensional transformation of Albrecht Dürer's famous ʺHareʺ, the original of which is held in the Albertina's collection. An oversized ʺDürer Hareʺ by Ottmar Hörl was already on display at the same location in 2014. The new installation in this anniversary year picks up on this idea and giving the work a new presence.

Through this large-scale version of an art-historical motif, Hörl connects the past and the present. The sculpture exemplifies his artistic approach of transferring well-known pictuimages into public space and giving them a new effect through scale, material and colour. "Das große Hasenstück" is intended as a tribute to Albrecht Dürer and the Albertina - and as an invitation to experience art directly and beyond the boundaries of the museum.
