Sculptural installation "Mozart - The untameable Genius" in Salzburg, 2026

A new image of Mozart is taking over the composer's birthplace. To mark the 270th anniversary of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's birth, conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl, in collaboration with the International Mozarteum Foundation, presents the temporary art installation ʺMozart - The untameable geniusʺ.

At the heart of this large-scale serial project are around 320 gold-coloured sculptures, creating a compelling interplay between myth and humanity at various historic Mozart sites. The sculptures are installed throughout the Baroque Mirabell Gardens in the Bastion/Museum Pavilion area, the gardens of the Mozarteum, Mozart's Residence, and the historic Magic Flute Cottage.

With his Mozart sculpture, Ottmar Hörl breaks away from traditional representations of the composer. He has, quite literally, taken the musical genius off his pedestal, revealing the artist's deeply human side.

The golden figure portrays Mozart in an everyday, intimate pose. His right hand is courteously extended towards the viewer, while his left hand rests gently on the head of a female dog. She is ʺPimperlʺ, the Mozart family's legendary pet, who played a central role in family life and was affectionately mentioned dozens of times in the family's correspondence.

By portraying Mozart as an animal lover, Hörl deconstructs the elitist cult of genius. He transforms the historical icon into a figure that feels approachable, relatable and relevant to contemporary audiences.

The sculptures meet visitors at eye level, without barriers. It is only through the interaction of the public and by being photographed that the installation is truly brought to life.

The installation will remain on display until 30 August 2026.
