Ludwig II. of Bavaria was born on 25. August 1845 in Nymphenburg Palace near Munich. He is considered a passionate builder of palaces and is also known as the "Fairy Tale King".
From the very beginning, Ludwig was committed to promoting culture. Ludwig's financial support enabled Wagner to build the Festival Theatre in Bayreuth. The first festival took place there in 1876.
During the Bayreuth Festival in 2025, Ludwig II. plays the leading role in the sculpture installation as a golden sculpture. The focus will be on Ludwig's role as a patron of Richard Wagner and as a pioneer of the festival.
The Wagner sculpture titled "Die Verneigung" ["The Bow"], which can be seen next to Ludwig II., is already known from last year. The two sculptures will adorn the Green Hill as a duo until 26. August 2025.
"Both figures together tell the story of Bayreuth. Without Ludwig, Wagner would not have been able to realise his artistic dreams. The king was a creative person – just born into the wrong family," explains Ottmar Hörl.
